John McCain, Sleepy Delegates and Nothing Specific

I am trying to figure out what to say about John McCain’s speech at the convention last night but really am having a tough time.

The speech was… well…

Sad.

Yeah, yeah, I know- I’m a Democrat- and as such, you likely didn’t expect a glowing assessment from me- but even when Sarah Palin spoke the other night, she invoked… something within me… as did Rudy Giuliani, Joe Lieberman and Fred Thompson… even if that something was laughter or disdain… a flash of anger, perhaps.

But…

McCain?

Not so much.

I felt sorry for him.

This moment, this speech, this convention, was supposed to be his.

This was going to be his time to shine… his moment of truth…

Right?

Apparently not.

The entire episode, from start to finish, was uncomfortable.

McCain has never been counted among the greatest speakers in the world, but last night, not only did he not bring his A-Game…

He brought nothing.

Where was the Maverick?

Some of his own delegates fell asleep while the man was talking.

Uh…

That ain’t a good sign.

At no point, other than when talking about his POW experience, did he even say anything specific.

He spent a whole lot of time talking about “change” and serving the “greater good”, finding a “goal greater than yourself”… but never once managed to tell us what changes were coming, what greater good he serves, or what goal he’s encouraging us to reach for that is bigger than ourselves.

What is the plan of action, should he win this election?

He said he’d fought for the “right strategy” in Iraq, but…

What the heck does that mean?

Can I get a specific please? At least that way I could tell if his “right” strategies are “right” for my family, my country and myself.

Was he hoping to come across as a quiet, elderly man, who completely lacks any semblance of passion (except when speaking about himself and his own personal accomplishments from 40 years ago)?

I mean, if that’s what he was trying to do…

Mission Accomplished.

Where was the great warrior? What happened to the man who was going to grab this country by the ass and change us forever?

Clearly The-Great-John-McCain was absent last night… perhaps having taken advantage of some cozy St. Paul diner’s early bird special and turning in early for the night… or something… because the man I saw take the stage…

… Had obviously already retired for the evening…

Way prior to his own opening remarks.
